Summer. The season for bugs, barbecues, backyards, and beach blankets. Those blissful months when many of us enjoy fewer responsibilities in daily life and getting outside more often naturally becomes a part of daily routines for all. But we all know that the siren call of indoor distractions can also be hard to ignore during long and lazy summer days. Despite the best of intentions and even the knowledge that getting out into nature will feel fantastic, not all of us have the easiest of times getting our young ones organized and out the door for an outside adventure. Others might find that getting kids out isn’t an issue, but that they are raising inquiring minds who would really enjoy having a bit of science or nature study added to their time spent outdoors.

This summer, we propose that you let us here at Mud Puddles to Meteors help you out.

The Mud Puddles Summer Nature Camp is a four week long exploration of some of our favorite topics related to the outdoors and the things you might find there. Each week will focus on a different theme and provide you and yours with a number of resources to help you learn all about it, while also having a great time making art, doing projects, and getting outdoors.

Here is what we’ve got planned for you:

– a four week long nature study camp starting July 6th

– a new themed module each week with its own PDF ebook filled with beautiful photographs, projects, book lists, and more

– access to the camp Facebook group where you can engage in discussions, ask questions, and get to know fellow campers

Our summer camp themes will be insects, feathers, flowers, and stars and constellations.

Each week during the workshop you will receive a new themed PDF ebook to download. It will include information, projects, lists of favorite books related to the topic, and great ideas for engaging your kids with the week’s theme.

You will also receive daily emails highlighting certain parts of the ebook and giving you hints and tips for getting the most out of our experience with it.

We will be sharing our experiences, our finished projects, and our questions with one another in a private Facebook group that will remain open for 30 days after the workshop has finished.

When the workshop is over you will…

– be able to feel great about how you spent your summer– outdoors exploring nature and encouraging your kids to be curious!

– have greater confidence in your ability to help your kids find answers to their questions about how things work in nature

– be able to use your experiences with the projects and activities to help you be more comfortable getting your kids outside to explore

about us collage

We are enthusiastic advocates for getting kids outdoors and for the good it does all of us to get little dirty and to look a little more closely at the natural world. Dawn lives on the wild Nova Scotia coast, Annie in a densely settled urban neighborhood just outside of Boston. Our perspectives on how and where to meet nature may be very different these days, but we want to show you how anyone, anywhere can do it!

Together we have written the forthcoming book, Whatever the Weather: Science Experiments and Art Activities that Explore the Wonders of Weather (Roost Books, April 2016)

Some Answers to Questions You May Have

Do I need to know a lot about nature to participate?

No! We will provide you with all of the information and resources you need to guide your children through each week of camp.

Do I have to sign up for all four weeks?

Yes. While we know summer is a busy time and you may miss a week of camp you can always use the resources given to launch into nature study another week before summer ends or even long after school has begun. The information, projects, and resources can be used at any time, and we encourage you to keep all of the PDFs and emails in a special camp folder to refer back to them as needed.

I live in the city, will this camp still benefit my family?

Yes. We will provide ample ideas and resources for those living in the heart of the city to engage their families in nature study and exploration.

What age range is the camp geared towards?

While most of the projects and activities are suitable for ages 5-10, parents could modify some things for younger children.
