We are delighted to have Alex back today to share about geocaching.

From Alex

Geocaching is a fun outdoor activity that can be shared as a family. Geocaching can be enjoyed in every season. I like to think of geocaching as a treasure hunt. It encourages us to get outdoors while having fun.

Caches are found all over the world. They are small containers that include a log and sometimes other items. To find out if any are in your area, visit geocaching.com. The site also has information on how to get started. Basically, you can use your own smart phone with a GPS app to find the caches, or a geocaching app; or an actual GPS. Choose how many caches you will try to find, go out and have fun!

If you are interested in geocaching in the winter, the geocaching blog has some great tips. I would add, especially if geocaching with children:
- be sure to be properly dressed for the weather
- plan your route ahead of time
- keep safety in mind at all times – snow covered obstacles, icy spots…
- keep to a reasonable amount of time based on your children’s ages
- plan for hot drinks and yummy snacks when you get home
- have fun!

Fun! We can’t wait to try this with our little man, maybe this year, but most likely next year when he is a little older :)

The boys love to find ‘treasures’ as we call them! It’s a great way to get outside and visit new places. Apparently, there is a geocache at the rest spot between NS and NB but there are always people around when we go so we haven’t been able to look for it without giving it away (some people who don’t geocache find them and destroy or move them).

My husband we so excited when he was able to place his own geocache and the boys thought that was totally cool!

Every time we visit a new trail the boys say, “We should put a geocache here!”.

Thanks for sharing. :)

We love geocaching and it has taken us to some beautiful spots we would never have discovered otherwise…we even found a secret windmill less than 2 miles from home that we never knew was there…so exciting!
